Cloud-managed service is the fastest-growing area one analyst said in response to an MSP acquisition this week.

Channel people at Kaseya, AT&T Business, Cohesity and more are among the individuals making waves this week. Channel Futures’ Channel People Making Waves showcases those who have made an impact over the last seven days.

There’s something that feels good when someone retires after three decades with a company. It demonstrates grit, tenacity, loyalty and leadership. We feature a woman who spent 32 years at AT&T. She wasn’t just dedicated to the company. She was a champion for the channel. Check out our slideshow above to find out who and about her legacy.

Speaking of legacy, there’s a new CEO in town who will need to craft a vision for Avaya. Read on to find out how his background may be an asset to the company.

Also, we would be remiss if we didn’t talk about cybersecurity and MSPs. The industry has never been immune to cyberattacks but it appears that MSPs may be more vulnerable to them now. An expert at Huntress discusses in this roundup one recent target and how MSPs should prepare for malicious hackers.

Is it Twilight or a New Day for the Technology Advisory Channel?

By | Managed Services News

“We get to a certain point where we’re like, ‘How do we get bigger?'” Bret Hickenlooper said.

Technology advisory firm Sumo Communications founder Bret Hickenlooper started to envision his exit five years ago.

Hickenlooper, sitting in the lobby of the Great America hotel in Salt Lake City, seems at peace. He cracks a smile, happy to be back around colleagues and friends at the Telarus Partner Summit. It’s nice to be back in the business after his short retirement, he tells Channel Futures.

Hickenlooper launched the agency in 2002. Like many partners in the channel, he formed his agency after working in sales at a carrier. And like other agents, his firm rode a wave of growth as the advisory model gained traction over direct sales as the preferred way to buy technology. But the same generation is now facing a crossroads as they enter the twilight of their careers.

Sumo Communications’ Bret Hickenlooper

“There are a lot of people like me in the channel who started their business 20 years ago and are now thinking, ‘What’s my exit strategy?’ Hickenlooper told Channel Futures at last week’s Summit.

A Crossroads

As many agents consider retiring, outside investors are entering the space en masse and offering a valid financial option. At the same time, many partners that remain are addressing the validity of the broker model and coming to the conclusion that they need more than recurring commissions to stay solvent. Moreover, those that want to grow their businesses feel pressure to add revenue streams and services.

“We get to a certain point where we’re like, ‘How do we get bigger?’” Hickenlooper said. “Scale is really difficult to do. You’re just trying to outpace churn and babysit your base, and no matter how much you sell every year, there’s still potential tucked in your base that’s eroding. It’s really a puzzle.”

In the meantime, the technology service distribution (TSD) market is consolidating at a breakneck pace. In the last three months, PlanetOne and TCG have joined forces with larger players. The leaders of these combined firms cast a vision of a procurement model that outperforms direct sales and also beats the world’s biggest systems integrators for enterprise customers.

Telarus’ Patrick Oborn

“That’s a lot of money for a lot of people out there,” Telarus chief product officer Patrick Oborn told Channel Futures. “We would prefer to pull that money away from Accenture and Deloitte and those folks, and put it in the hands of people that work with the big TSBs and work in this industry.”

But will this partner model achieve this vision, and what will victory require?

A Strategic Partner

Jim Glackin, Nitel‘s executive vice president of channel sales, echoed a comment that leaders of some of the larger agencies have been saying: Partners need to position themselves as strategic business advisers.

Even though agents are adopting more advanced technologies, Glackin said many of them focus too much on transactional, product-based selling. And that’s also the case with traditional VARs, he said.

“How do you help the partners to go into their meetings thinking more broadly and not narrowly focused on selling UCaaS or circuits?” Glackin said.

Glackin, Jim

Jim Glackin

Years ago, Glackin (who at the time worked for a large carrier) met with the CIO of a major retailer. A partner of his had already established a strong relationship with the CEO, and that had resulted in a $400,000 MPLS contract. But the CIO didn’t seem to feel the same way, Glackin said. They had been scheduled for an hourlong meeting, but when Glackin arrived, he learned it was now a 20-minute meeting. Network simply wasn’t important to them.

The disinterest from the CIO seemed to envelop the room in the opening minutes of the meeting. It was at that point Glackin, who owned some of the retailer’s consumer products, started asking about …

Vista Equity Partners Buying Avalara for $8.4 Billion, Taking It Private

By | Managed Services News

When completed, Avalara’s shares will no longer trade on the New York Stock Exchange.

Vista Equity Partners is acquiring Avalara, a provider of tax compliance automation for businesses of all sizes. It’s an $8.4 billion transaction that will take the company private.

Vista Equity will acquire all outstanding shares of Avalara stock for $93.50 per share in an all-cash transaction. That includes Avalara’s net debt. The per-share purchase price represents a 27% premium over the company’s closing share price as of July 6. That’s the last trading day prior to media reports regarding a potential transaction.

The acquisition should close in the second half of 2022, subject to customary closing conditions. Those include approval by Avalara shareholders and receipt of regulatory approval.

Upon completion of the transaction, Avalara’s shares will no longer trade on the New York Stock Exchange. It will then become a private company. It will continue to operate under the Avalara name and brand.

Vista Equity also is acquiring Citrix and is taking it private, too.

Vista Equity Plans Expansion with Avalara

Founded in 2004, Avalara’s success is built on an extensive partner network. It has a large tax content data and repository, and a cloud-native, end-to-end multi-product tax compliance portfolio.

In partnering with Vista Equity, Avalara will look to build on its platform by refining its go-to-market (GTM) strategy. It also plans to expand its international workforce, streamline its systems architecture, and pursue value-accretive M&A opportunities.

Keep up with the latest channel-impacting mergers and acquisitions in our M&A roundup.

Scott McFarlane is Avalara‘s co-founder and CEO.

“For nearly two decades, Avalara has ambitiously pursued its vision to automate global compliance, making tax less taxing for businesses and governments around the world,” he said. “As a leader in this category, we believe our continued investment in innovation and experience is exciting for our customers, partners and employees. We are pleased to partner with Vista and will benefit from their expertise in enterprise software as we build and improve upon our cloud compliance platform.”

Adrian Alonso is managing director at Vista Equity.

Vista has built a reputation as a preferred partner for founder-led, next-generation software companies,” he said. “We look forward to working with Scott and the entire Avalara team to advance their vision and continue delivering innovative solutions to customers.”

Twilio Customers’ Data Stolen in Phishing Attacks that Trick Employees

By | Managed Services News

The hackers impersonated Twilio’s IT department.

Hackers have accessed Twilio customer data by tricking employees into handing over their corporate login credentials via phishing attacks.

Twilio detailed the phishing attacks in a blog. It plans to update it as more information is available.

On Aug. 4, Twilio became aware of unauthorized access to information related to a limited number of customer accounts through a sophisticated social engineering attack.

“This broad-based attack against our employee base succeeded in fooling some employees into providing their credentials,” it said. “The attackers then used the stolen credentials to gain access to some of our internal systems, where they were able to access certain customer data. We are still early in our investigation, which is ongoing.”

Deceptive Text Messages

Current and former employees recently reported receiving text messages purporting to be from Twilio‘s IT department. Typical texts suggested the employees’ passwords had expired, or that their schedule had changed. The hackers instructed them to log in to a URL they controlled. The text messages originated from U.S. carrier networks.

“We worked with the U.S. carriers to shut down the actors and worked with the hosting providers serving the malicious URLs to shut those accounts down,” Twilio said. “Additionally, the threat actors seemed to have sophisticated abilities to match employee names from sources with their phone numbers.”

Twilio believes the threat actors behind the phishing attacks are well organized, sophisticated and methodical in their actions.

“We have not yet identified the specific threat actors at work here, but have liaised with law enforcement in our efforts,” it said.

Attack Mitigation

Once Twilio confirmed the incident, its security team revoked access to the compromised employee accounts to mitigate the attack. In addition, a forensics firm is helping Twilio in its investigation.

“We have re-emphasized our security training to ensure employees are on high alert for social engineering attacks, and have issued security advisories on the specific tactics being utilized by malicious actors since they first started to appear several weeks ago,” it said. “We have also instituted additional mandatory awareness training on social engineering attacks in recent weeks. Separately, we are examining additional technical precautions as the investigation progresses.”

Twilio is contacting only affected customers on an individual basis with the details.

“We will of course perform an extensive post-mortem on this incident and begin instituting betterments to address the root causes of the compromise immediately,” it said.

Human Error Behind Many Breaches

Erfan Shadabi is head of marketing at Comforte AG, a data security platform provider.

“Many of the data breaches we have seen in the past few months have human error lurking within their backstories,” he said. “Phishing is a type of cybercrime in which victims are contacted by an attacker posing as a trustworthy entity in order to obtain sensitive information or data, such as login credentials, credit card details or other personally identifiable information. One of the best approaches to mitigate such attacks is to adopt the zero trust framework.”

With zero trust, an organization assumes an attacker has already breached it, Shadabi said. It provides no implicit trust, verifies again and again, and only provides minimal privileges upon successful authentication.

“Protection methods such as tokenization can complement this framework because by tokenizing sensitive data immediately upon entering the corporate data ecosystem, and then not de-protecting it, people can have minimal or no access to the truly sensitive information while still being able to accomplish tasks (like data analytics),” he said.

Szilveszter Szebeni is CISO and co-founder of Tresorit, a European encryption-based security software company.

“While continuous phishing testing employees is the minimum, companies are not even safe using two-factor authentication (2FA),” he said. “With a targeted attack, even accounts protected by 2FA can be hacked by stealing a session using a fake website. The real solution for the industry is to go passwordless. Unfortunately the industry does not support it in every use case.”
